Immunizations
Clinics are held every Friday 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. or by appointment Monday through Friday.
The Linn County Health Department administers all state mandated childhood vaccines. Vaccines protect against Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis, Polio, Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Haemophilus Influenza, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Chicken Pox, Meningitis, Rotavirus, Human Papillomavirus (HPV) and Pneumonia. Influenza vaccine is available on or before November 1 each year. There is an administration fee for these vaccines that we can bill to HealthWave or Medicaid. We do not bill private insurance companies. No one will be denied vaccinations due to the inability to pay this fee.
Adult Vaccines are available to everyone. Vaccines provided include Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Pneumonia and Influenza. Charges for these vaccines vary according to our cost. Adult vaccines must be paid for at the time they are received. The exception to this is Influenza and Pneumonia Vaccines for those on Medicare Part B, we do bill Medicare for these vaccines. We do not bill private insurance.
Tuberculosis skin testing is available to everyone regardless of insurance status for a fee of $10.00. This test will be provided free of charge for persons who have been in contact with a confirmed case of active tuberculosis.
Family Planning/Women’s Clinics
Clinics are conducted by a Nurse Practitioner and a Linn County Public Health Nurse. They are held every other month by appointment only. These clinics are open to everyone regardless of insurance status. Fees are charged and we can bill HealthWave or Medicaid. We do not bill private insurance but can provide clients with a receipt to send to their insurance company
Clinic services include Pap Smears, Breast Exam, Pelvic Exam, STD Testing as indicated, Blood Pressure screening, Hemoglobin (test for anemia), Blood Glucose test, Nutrition Counseling and Assessment of Immunization status—fee for these services is $45.00.
Birth control methods are available during these clinics for an additional fee. Fees vary according to type of method selected. All birth control methods are thoroughly explained, with attention to individual needs and preferences.
WIC (Women, Infants and Children Supplemental Food Program)
Clinics are held every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday by appointment only.
WIC is a nutrition education and food supplement program funded by the Department of Agriculture through a grant from the Kansas Department of Health & Environment. This program is available for pregnant, breastfeeding and recently delivered mothers, infants and children up to 5 years of age. Eligibility is according to income and participants must be a resident of Kansas. Income guidelines are available at the Health Department, call or stop by the office for more information.
The WIC Program is open to eligible persons regardless of race, color, age, sex, national origin or handicapping conditions. There are no fees for this program.
Physical Assessments
Monday through Friday, by appointment only
Day Care physicals and school entry physicals (not sports physicals) are available to all children regardless of income or insurance status. A fee for service is charged, we do not bill insurance.
Kan Be Healthy physicals are available for children up to 21 years of age with a current Medicaid or HealthWave Medical Card. Physical includes head to toe physical assessment, vision and hearing screening, dental screening, hemoglobin (test for anemia), blood lead test (under 6 years of age), diabetes test if indicated and urine testing. Basic health and nutrition education are provided during the assessment. If there are any immunizations needed, they will be given during the visit for an additional fee.
Community Health Screenings/Services
Available to all Linn County Residents on a walk in basis if a nurse is available or by appointment, Monday through Friday

Disease Follow Up and Containment
Linn County Public Health Nurses, under the guidance of Kansas Department of Health & Environment, conduct follow up on designated reportable diseases. Certain communicable disease cases may cause the Health Department to suspend all other activities in order to investigate and prevent the spread of the infectious disease. The Health Department works closely with local physicians and school nurses to prevent the spread of disease.
Healthy Start Program
The Healthy Start Program is partially funded by a grant from Kansas Department of Health and Environment. A trained visitor contacts and provides support and education to pregnant women and children up to 2 years of age. A wide variety of information is offered to clients during the visit including referrals to appropriate community clinics and services. The Healthy Start Visitor is supervised by a Public Health Nurse who is also available for consultation.
International Travel
The Health Department can provide some of the needed vaccinations for travel abroad. Referrals are provided to agencies for vaccinations that are not available locally. Information on needed vaccinations according to the country of destination is available from the Centers for Disease Control.

Public Health and Emergency Response
The Linn County Health Department receives federal funds that are used to build our preparedness abilities to respond to biological terrorism or a massive disease outbreak that would require providing medications or injections to the entire county population in a short period of time. In order to receive these funds, the County Health Department has been required to develop multiple plans that could be used in a variety of public health emergency responses. The Health Department is required to update the plans quarterly and practice them on an annual basis.
Many hours are spent working on emergency preparedness. The plans and exercises are reviewed annually by KDHE. If Linn County were to receive enough doses of either injectible or oral medication to offer to everyone in the county in a short period of time, the Point of Dispensing (POD) would be at the 4-H Building on the Linn County Fair Grounds in Mound City. Dates and times would be posted on this web site and flyers would be posted in local grocery stores, libraries, city halls and various county businesses.
